subSURFACE

A collection of work inspired by archaeological excavation and the subtleties of form and hidden surfaces. Using a water-etching, where the clay is eroded with water and pressure, to produce a surface reminiscent of archaeological and geological deposits. Glimpses of these patterns continue onto the surrounding surface, marked out by a sweep of inky blue against the white. The vessels are shown here against stunning textiles by Olivia Jeffries ans shown together as part of 'Tactile Forms' show.
FROSTWORKS
A collection of functional vessels with a stoneware clay and glaze combination that is inspired by earthworks emerging from snow and frost on my local heath and woodland winter walks. The tops of low banks, marked out as exposed lines of earth and moss, devoid of snow and frost, set against the white of snow and speckled frost-covered leaf cover.
ARCHAEOLOGY
The ARCHAEOLOGY collection are wheel-thrown in an off-white earthenware clay and hand decorated with patterns inspired by the archaeological landscapes of East Anglia, with mid-century modern palette of blues, greys, pinks. The pieces are finished in a wonderfully soft and tactile matte transparent glaze. This collection is closest to my heart as they represent my journey from mapping archaeology to ceramicist.
RAKU
The RAKU collection has a simple, yet dramatic beauty; where minimal linear patterns and motifs, or free-flowing brushstrokes in crackled glazes contrast with a smoked black clay surface. These decorative pieces are all fired to around 1000c then taken out of the kiln, causing the glazes to crack due to thermal shock. The pots are then placed into a smoking chamber fillled with sawdust or shredded paper, which ignites and smokes and stains the bare clay and crackled glaze a beautiful smoky black.
HOMEWARES
The HOMEWARE collection is wheel-thrown or hand-built in beautiful speckled stoneware clays, finished in tactile matte glazes in a range of fresh and complimentary colours. The pieces are designed to be stylish, yet function, additions to your home. The larger pieces are decorated with a minimal linear decoration that reference my archaeological designs.
JEWELLERY
The JEWELLERY collection combines the main elements of the my larger ceramics pieces, in particular my archaeological mapping, minimal linear motifs and mid-century modern art inspired palettes, into distinctive and unique pieces of wearable art.
